Wright makes strong hint at BSB pull-out
GSE Racing wrapped up the British Superbike constructor’s championship at Croft yesterday but doubt remains over their future in BSB, after team manager Colin Wright questioned whether the team would defend their crown in 2010.
Leon Camier’s win and sixth place finish, coupled with James Ellison’s second and fourth place finishes over the weekend mean that only the Airwaves Yamaha duo can secure the rider’s championship,.
Camier, who stands at the top of the championship on 434.5 points, ahead on Ellison on 335 and Hydrex Honda’s Stuart Easton on 303, needs just 26 points in the next five races to wrap up the championship after his record-breaking 16 wins from 21 so far this season.
Camier’s performances in particular have raised questions over his future, with the 23-year-old hotly tipped for a move to World Superbikes in 2010, although rumours have persisted that Camier could take GSE Racing with him, leaving BSB without its most successful team for the best part of a decade.
GSE Racing, who have already impressed in a wildcard appearance at the British round of this year’s WSB championship at Donington, securing top eight finishes on BSB-spec machines, are also seeking a new title sponsor after the loss of Airwaves but those financial concerns have not quashed suggestions of a move to the world stage.
And Wright fanned the flames yesterday after securing the championship, hinting more strongly than ever that the team could be moving away from BSB in 2010.
“To come away from Croft with a 5th BSB Championship and Yamaha’s first for 11 years is absolutely awesome, I cannot thank the guys and girls in the team enough,” said Wright. “We have enjoyed an amazing run of success since 1999 and I’m so very proud of all those that have made it happen, the records we have achieved over the last 10 years are unlikely to be matched. Therefore, GSE Racing will be known as the most successful British racing team for many years to come.
“The only question is, will we be in a position to break records in 2010 and beyond?”
