You will always improve your chances of avoiding an accident by doing your best to ensure other drivers can see you, even when you’re behind them.
There’s a very simple rule that applies when you’re following a lorry: if you can see its mirrors, then the driver can see you.
If you’re close up behind a lorry, apart from not being able to see in front of it for any potential hazards you will also be out of the field of vision of the driver.
Instead, position your bike to the driver’s side, slightly outside the track of the lorry (as long as you’re still well clear of oncoming traffic). This way you can see further down the road and you’ll also have a clear view of the driver’s mirror.
Which means he has a clear view of you.
