New helmet `superskin’

The Trade Expo is a chance for the motorcycle industry to get together and see the latest models, accessories, clothing and other products aimed at UK bikers, reports Alastair Walker.

This year, the most innovative product is arguably the helmet Superskin, developed by British inventor Ken Philips, and launched by Lazer helmets of Belgium. Lazer have a history of adopting new design features, and were the first helmet manufacturer to use the double-glazed visor and the flip-down integral sun-visor.

The new Superskin is a flexible coating which is sealed to the outer shell of the helmet and offers a reduction on surface abrasion and friction in the event of an accident. Every motorcycle accident is slightly different, but often a rider may suffer concussion or other head injuries, as their head impacts repeatedly with the road surface – each time the helmet shell makes contact, the Superskin flexes, and therefore absorbs some of that impact.

Lazer asked the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg to conduct independent scientific tests to assess how the Superskin might save lives and reduce brain injuries in accidents. The test results demonstrated that the Superskin reduced intracerebral shearing by 67.5%. What that means in lay terms is that the brain’s impact with the skull, and any resulting blood vessel damage, via tearing for example, is greatly reduced on impact.

There’s no doubt that many riders will be interested to see, and touch, this new product. There is nothing like it on the market. Lazer’s UK importer told insidebikes that the launch at the Expo had resulted in several dealers placing orders for the first Lazer lid featuring Superskin. The full-face helmet will retail at £120 and should be in your local motorbike dealership in the next few weeks.
