Venhill’s brakeline advice

Venhill, the well known supplier of braided steel brake lines to racers and road riders alike, have offered some timely advice to bikers who intend upgrading their braking systems over the winter.

If you’re shopping for braided brake lines then Venhill recommend you ask your supplier what grade of steel the lines use. Not all `stainless steel’ is of the same high quality, so Venhill recommend ( and use ) Marine-grade stainless, which is obviously more corrosion-resistant as it’s designed for use at sea.

Beneath the braided steel coating, check what the inner core is made from too. Cheap nylon brake lines can flex or stretch under load, so what you want are DuPont Teflon inners. Less brake line expansion means more fluid pumping the caliper pistons, simple as that.

As with many hard parts on motorcycles, it’s the detailing that sets the good kit apart from the eveyday stuff. Check the fittings on the lines carefully. Do they have threaded swivel fittings, which allow a perfect fit when routing brake lines? You want new lines that fit inch perfect around your calipers, tax disc holder maybe, or front mudguard. Tidy, as they say on Barry Island.

Every Venhill hose is pressure-tested to 1500 psi, with a monthly random test of 10,000 psi acting as back up. Good brakes can save your life, so you need to be sure that upgrading your brakes with braided lines is a wise investment, not just a fashion statement. Venhill lines meet German TUV and USA DOT safety standards – the toughest in the world.
