Toseland insists he will race in Portugal

"But it is getting better and it will be fine for Portugal anyway; no problem."

James Toseland has insisted that he will be racing at Portimao in the second round of the World Superbike Championship, despite the injuries to his hand that he suffered in the first race.

The former champion hurt his left hand during a free practice fall, resulting in a fracture. He later aggravated the injury during race one in a violent high-side, which led to him landing heavily on his injured hand.

Toseland has said that he didn’t realise the extent of the damage to his hand due to the amount of anaesthetic he was using over the race weekend and said that he would not have taken part in the second race without it.

“There was a fine crack in the third metacarpal bone of my hand, so it has taken a bit longer than I thought” he said.

He added: “I damaged it a bit more than I thought I did, and with all the anaesthetic I had on it over the race weekend and in the race itself I couldn’t really feel what I had done to it. Without the anaesthetic I would not have been able to ride”

The Yamaha Sterilgarda rider has said however, that the injury will not stop him competing in the upcoming Portimao race and insists that he will be fit to race.

The two-time champion said: “But it is getting better and it will be fine for Portugal anyway; no problem.”

After the fall which damaged his hand in race one, Toseland finished tenth in the Phillip Island second race.
