Carole Nash pushes for clarity as classic restorers face insurance dilemma

Restorers of imported classic vehicles are at risk of breaking tough new rules designed to run uninsured riders off the road, reports leading classic bike insurance firm, Carole Nash.

Under the current system restorers of imported machines must secure comprehensive insurance cover for their vehicle before submitting an age related plate application with the DVLA.  Insurance can be provided using the frame number rather than registration but the vehicle owner must then provide their insurance broker with registration details within 14 days.

Carole Nash says that the 14 day deadline for providing vehicle registration details is too tight as it fails to take into account the time it takes for the DVLA to process age related plate applications.  “In our experience it can take the DVLA up to 28 days to confirm an age related plate, twice the time currently allowed by the Motor Insurers Information Centre to submit registration details. The situation is going to get even worse next January when the submission deadline is cut to just seven days,” commented Carole Nash’s Operations Director, Dave Bowcock

“It’s an anomaly of the system that seems to have slipped under the MIIC’s radar although we have highlighted our concerns to them and the DVLA. We totally support any initiative that helps rid UK roads of the menace of uninsured riders and drivers, but would like to see this particular and unfortunate quirk of the system addressed because it puts classic enthusiasts in a totally impossible position.”
