This survey is conducted annually by the UK’s biggest motorcycle insurance specialist, Carole Nash, which currently has around 230,000 bikers and over 300,000 bikes on its books. It analyses risk by examining all the claims received by Carole Nash during the previous calendar year according to main postcode area, model, type and other factors. Risk rankings are calculated by comparing the number of thefts against the number of policyholders in each category.

Fact File :

  • Bikers living in the London North (N) postcode area are at the highest risk in the UK of motorcycle theft.
  • Outside of Greater London bikers living in the Hull (HU) postcode area are at the highest risk in the UK of motorcycle theft.

  • Bikes are 6 times more likely to be stolen from a public road and 5.5 times more likely from a car park, than from a garage.
  • The bigger the No Claims Bonus, the lower the theft risk. Bikers with less than 12 months NCB are 7.6 times more likely to suffer a theft than bikers with 5 or more years NCB.
  • The lower the value of a bike, the higher the theft risk. A bike valued at £1,000 is over 5.5 times more likely to be stolen than a bike valued at £12,000.
  • The younger the rider, the higher the theft risk. Bikers aged between 16-19 are 2.5 times more likely to suffer a theft than bikers aged 40-44 and 4.3 times more likely than bikers aged 65-69.
