This survey is conducted annually by the UK’s biggest motorcycle insurance specialist, Carole Nash, which currently has around 230,000 bikers and over 300,000 bikes on its books. It analyses risk by examining all the claims received by Carole Nash during the previous calendar year according to main postcode area, model and type. Risk rankings are calculated by comparing the number of thefts against the number of policyholders in each category.

Fact File :

• Bikers in North West London (NW) postcode area are at the highest risk in the UK of motorcycle theft. A biker living in the NW area is five times more likely than average to have their motorcycle stolen.
• Outside of the London boroughs bikers living in Liverpool are at the highest risk in the UK of motorcycle theft. A biker living in the L area is over twice as likely than average to have their motorcycle stolen.
• For the second consecutive year bikers living in the Edinburgh (EH) postcode area are at highest risk in Scotland of motorcycle theft.
• Bikers living in the Newport (NP) postcode area are at highest risk in Wales of motorcycle theft.
• The Preston (PR) postcode was the highest climber in the UK rankings, rising 64 places from 100th position in the 2007 survey to 36th in the 2008 survey.
• The Hereford (HR) postcode was the biggest faller in the UK rankings, dropping 64 places from 48th position in the 2007 survey to joint 112th (or joint bottom) in the 2008 survey.
• For the second consecutive year the Honda SCV 100 Lead is the bike at highest risk of theft in the UK.
• Scooters and mopeds are the motorcycle type at highest risk of theft. A scooter/moped is six times more likely to be stolen than the lowest risk bike type, a tourer.
