SEEMS A LONG time since the last race back in October, but it’s been a good winter. The last few months of 2017 were all about rehab on the injuries I sustained at Brands Hatch. But it wasn’t too bad because I had time to recover and had a good plan in place working with my trainer Kirk and physio Stuart. The only down side was I had to stay off bikes and be sensible until the New Year.

At the beginning of January, I flew out to Spain for my annual training camp. I rented a house with Sam and Alex Lowes, and we rode supermoto and pit bikes nearly every day. Plus, Tommy Searle (MX star) came out for a couple of weeks. For me this was just what I needed to kick myself into gear.

At the end of January we completed a two-day test in Jerez on my race bike, alongside all the WSBK riders. Even though I was on my BSB bike with no electronics, I was fourth fastest overall and the fastest BSB rider. I also set my personal best time on my BSB bike. The team have done a great job putting the new components together, and the bike feels even better than ever.

I returned to the UK to go straight to the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle show, which was good fun. From there I flew straight out to Dubai where I hooked up with Sam Smith to do some sand riding. I was a little cautious about my foot but had a great time playing and training. We cycled two hours every morning at 06:30 as it was too hot later in the day.

Since getting back to the UK the weather has been really bad so I’ve basically just been back in the gym and preparing to head back to Spain where I’ll be doing six more days of testing. Now the season is underway and I’ve got a win under my belt, I feel readier than ever!

Cheers, Leon
