Having someone take your prized possession can be absolutely devastating. And upon first discovering your motorbike has been stolen, it can leave you feeling less than clear headed. So with that in mind, here are the steps you need to take in the event that your motorbike is stolen.

Report your motorbike as stolen

It’s important to inform both the police and your bike insurance company/broker straight away if your motorbike has been stolen.

You can call the Carole Nash claims number on 0333 005 2244 (UK) or 1800 930 803 (IRL).

Call your local police station

Speak to your local police station by dialling 101. You’ll need to have some information to hand so make sure you gather the following before you make the call.

Your motorbike’s:

  • registration number
  • make and model
  • colour

The police will provide you with a crime reference number. Keep this safe because you will need to give this to your insurance company.

Call your insurance company/broker

Once you’ve provided the details to your insurance company, they will tell you how to make an insurance claim.

You can call the Carole Nash claims number on 0333 005 2244 (UK) or 1800 930 803 (IRL).

The police will tell the DVLA about the theft and if the bike is found, however, if your insurance pays out for your motorbike, you must inform the DVLA

The DVLA will also cancel your vehicle tax once they are aware that you’re not the owner of the motorbike. If you have a direct debit set up that will be cancelled automatically for you.

You’ll also automatically get a refund cheque for any full months left on your vehicle tax.

Tips for keeping your motorbike safe

Sometimes, no matter what you do, bike thieves will get their way. But there are certain things you can do to make it more difficult for them to steal your motorbike:

  • Keep it off road, in a locked garage for example
  • If you have to park on the road invest in a motorbike cover and lock/chain
  • Install a quality & professionally fitted bike alarm system (it could also reduce your motorbike insurance premiums)

At Carole Nash, we also provide every policyholder with a free DNA+ forensic protection system worth £30 to help prevent bike theft and aid in the recovery of your bike!
