How to Insure a Vintage Motorbike

There’s nothing quite like owning a motorbike that has some rich heritage behind it. It’s an immensely satisfying experience for many riders, as the feeling of owning a piece of history simply can’t be matched.

As an owner of a vintage motorbike, you’ll already know that your pride-and-joy will be amongst some of the most historically significant two-wheelers in the world. It stands to reason that you would want to make sure your memorable machine is properly protected, with the right type of bike insurance

But how exactly do you go about getting the right cover for your vintage motorbike? Well with Carole Nash it couldn’t be easier…

First, what makes a vintage motorbike?

It’s not always easy to distinguish a classic motorbike from a vintage model, but as a general rule it essentially comes down to the age of the vehicle. For example, if your bike is a fairly younger model, between 10 to 20 years old, then it will be eligible for a future classic policy. If it happens to be 10 to 20 years old then a classic bike insurance policy will be what you’re after.

However, if your bike happens to be over 30 years of age, this will put it firmly into the vintage category, and it will be eligible for a vintage motorbike insurance policy.

What type of cover can I get?

First you would need to decide what level of cover you’ll need for your vintage motorbike. The levels of insurance you can get are:

Comprehensive

This is the highest level of cover you can get to protect your vintage motorbike, as it will pay out for damages to your bike should you be involved in an accident that either was or wasn’t your fault.

Also, anyone else involved in the accident will be covered for any repairs they may need for their vehicles. Fire and theft cover are also included, meaning your vintage vehicle will be fully covered in case it’s stolen by thieves or if it suffers damage in a fire.

Third Party Fire and Theft

With this level of insurance, only the third party will be covered, and you won’t receive a pay out if you’re involved in an accident that was your fault. The third party will be able to claim for any damage caused by you to their vehicle. You will still be covered in the case of damage from fire, and if your motorbike is stolen, as the name suggests.

Additional Cover…

Personal Accident Cover

As an optional extra, you can choose to have Personal Accident Cover alongside your motorbike insurance. This means that if you or someone you’re riding with gets seriously injured in an accident, you’ll receive financial assistance. In the event of a fatal accident, the insurance will also pay out to your family, even if the accident was your fault. Keep in mind that every policy is different, but generally you will be covered for death, permanent and total disablement and loss of limbs.
