With yet another cold snap forecast this week and the tabloids falling over themselves to herald the arrival of a few centimetres of snow in the South East as the latest national crisis, a company in Italy has come up with an ingenious way of getting around even when the roads are coated in white blankets.
Govecs Slidescooters has come up with a neat way of turning almost any average scooter into a snowmobile, simply by replacing the front wheel with a single ski. The patented idea has been trialled in a number of ski resorts as a cheap and economical form of transport as well being used for entertainment activities.
There isn’t the noise that is typically associated with traditional snowmobiles and the fuel economy is likely to be a big improvement, even if stability looks like being compromised.
Unfortunately, getting one on the road legally in the UK is likely to prove difficult. Snowmobiles aren’t road legal in the UK and such modifications to a scooter won’t be covered by your bike insurance policy so for the time being at least, it looks as though keeping the scooter locked away in the garage this winter is still the safest option.
