In a statement, the motorcycle brand of German carmaker BMW warned owners of the 2014 BMW R1200 RT equipped with the Dynamic ESA option that there might be something wrong with the bike’s rear spring strut.
BMW said that around 450 bikes in the UK might have the problem and the company is now contacting all owners who might be affected. The German brand also noted that it was taking into account the fact that some owners of the model could be stranded abroad.
The company said that there are about 5,000 bikes globally that might have the defect in the suspension system and could have a potential failure of the plunger rod assembly inside.
BMW admitted that the brand cannot guarantee at this point that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail, so it urged bikers to immediately stop using the motorcycles. Although the news might be very disappointing, the German manufacturer stressed that its customers’ safety is its main priority.
When asked what will happen to British R1200 owners who are currently abroad, a spokesperson for BMW said that the company’s dealers will contact everyone and will help them address the problem.
According to BMW Motorrad USA, approximately 804 vehicles are affected by this issue in the United States.
