A Surrey biker has received a quote from motorcycle insurance giant Carole Nash that he’ll never forget: “Steve Alexander, you’ve won the £30,000 Carole Nash Old Skool Bobber!”

Yamaha-riding Steve accepted the keys to the one-off custom chopper from Long Way Round star Charlie Boorman at the Carole Nash International Motorcycle and Scooter show on Thursday (November 26th). The presentation at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre marked the end of a year long initiative which began with the Bobber being built live and against the clock by internationally renowned custom kings Hawg Haven at the 2008 bike show. After the bike was completed with just minutes to spare before the NEC shutters went down, Carole Nash announced it would be given away in a free prize draw. Steve’s name was then picked from the prize draw ‘hat’ from among hundreds of thousands of entries.

“I remembered seeing the bike being built at the NEC and then saw that all you needed do to try and win it was get a bike insurance quote from Carole Nash so I thought I’d have a go,” explained Steve who then decided to insure his Yamaha TM 850 with the company. “I’m absolutely over the moon to have won it. It’s a fantastic, unique and beautiful bike.”

The presentation finally gives the Bobber a home after it toured UK and Irish bike shows to the delight of bikers who weren’t able to be among more than 150,000 who saw it being created at the NEC show. Then it took 400 man hours of hard graft and creative ingenuity to create a stunning machine with more than a hint of Hawg Haven genius about it.

Built around a goosenecked Santee rigid frame and powered by a throaty Revtech 88ci 1450cc polished motor fitted with Mikuni Carb, the Carole Nash Bobber incorporates a number of neat Hawg touches. These include a bespoke stainless steel 2-into-1 exhaust with vintage slip-on muffler and hand-made rear fender and fuel tank.
