Have you ever found yourself out on the road, with the battery on your phone running low and nowhere to charge it up?
Finding a convenient place to charge your phone is not easy on a motorcycle, but that’s set to change with a new offering from Continental.
The automotive components manufacturer is developing a wire-free smart charging station that recharges your smartphone while you’re going along. To use it, simply place the smartphone in a special stowage box integrated into the motorcycle. This protects the phone from vibrations and the weather, and charges it continuously – meaning that you’ll arrive at your destination with a full battery.
Continental’s wireless charging system meets the “Qi” standard, which offers similar charging currents to standard USB charging connections and therefore has similar charging times to those of cable charging systems.
The smart charging station is compatible with a wide range of smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S5, S4 and S3, the LG G2 and the Nokia Lumia 1020, 925, 820 and 720. To equip a device for wireless charging you just need to replace the back cover with a Qi-compatible one.
For iPhone users, Qi-compatible cases are available for models from the iPhone 4 up. And some other phones support the Qi standard right out of the box, without needing a special back cover. They include Nokia’s Lumia 1520, 930 and 920, the Google Nexus 5 and 4 and the LG Optimus G Pro.
Worried about the smartphone or motorcycle components getting too hot? Continental says that its heat management system protects against overheating during charging. The device also incorporates foreign object detection to ensure that inductive charging stops immediately when keys, coins or other items are accidentally placed into the charging station.
Future developments planned by Continental include the integration of field communication (NFC) along with wireless charging, allowing a Bluetooth connection to the motorcycle’s electronics.
