Going on a road trip is an excellent way of broadening your horizons, especially if you’re travelling to Europe. The Czech Republic is a wonderful place to visit, as it’s filled with lots of beautiful sights. From the cosmopolitan capital of Prague, to the sprawling Bohemian Paradise, there is culture around every corner.
Prague
No trip to the Czech Republic would be complete without going to Prague. The capital is an architectural wonderland, featuring cobbled streets and Gothic buildings. Spend your time walking around the Old Town, which houses the famous astronomical clock. Visit Prague Castle and take a trip back in time to when the city was ruled by the kings of Bohemia.
During the night, go and see a show at the Prague National Theatre. Completed in 1881, the interior features busts of Czech theatrical personalities.
Moravian Karst
Moravian Karst is a protected nature reserve that’s made up of Devonian limestones. There are five cave systems interwoven together, containing many labyrinthine paths. The karst is also home to the Macocha Abyss, a 138 m deep gorge that formed when the ceiling of an underground cave chamber collapsed.
Bohemian Paradise
Anyone who’s looking to get in touch with nature should check out the Bohemian Paradise. It’s an area filled with rugged pine forests, fairytale castles and weird rock formations. The formations are made of sandstone and have names like Dragon’s Tooth and Choirmaster.
There are a number of historical buildings to visit, including Trosky Castle and Sychrov Castle. The latter was the home of the aristocratic Rohan family, who were highly influential in France.
Český Krumlov
Český Krumlov is a 13th century town that’s stepped in medieval history. The town has a Baroque styled theatre that was built in 1680 and retains its original stage machinery and props. Due to the theatre’s age, it’s only used three times a year when a opera is performed.
The town also hosts a number of festivals and events, such as the Five-Petaled Rose Festival. There’s also the International Music Festival that begins in July and features different genres of music.
Brno’s Cathedral of St Peter and Paul
Located in Brno, the cathedral of St Peter and Paul is one of the Czech Republic’s most important national monuments. The cathedral contains a crypt that’s filled with old tombs and the original walls are intact. The high towers are home to the Petrov bell, which is rung at 11am to commemorate Brno tricking the Swedes into ending their attack in 1645.
