Moto GP: Round 13

Moto-GP-Round-13.jpg

With Jorge Lorenzo crashing out and teams across the board struggling to cope with San Marino’s inclement weather, Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez claimed victory ahead of British riders Bradley Smith and Scott Redding with a time of 48 minutes 23.819 seconds.

In a weekend dominated by tactical tyre changes, Bradley Smith and Scott Redding delighted the British fans who embarked upon the2,600mile round-trip to Misano. In finishing second and third respectively, Smith and Redding became the first British riders to share a podium since Barry Sheene and Tom Herron stood beside one another in Venezuela, way back in 1979.

Unlike the celebratory Brits, the huge number of Valentino Rossi fans found their moods dampening as the Championship leader slipped from first to fifth with only seven laps remaining. With the track starting to dry, Marquez made the bold move to slick tyres at the perfect moment – forcing Rossi to concede his lead while making an impromptu second stop in the pits.

Despite victory, Spaniard Marquez still finds himself sitting third in the championship, 63 points behind Rossi, who, despite only finishing fifth, managed to extend his lead over nearest rider Jorge Lorenzo to 23 points.

With Moto GP heading to Spain in two weeks’ time, a home crowd will certainly play their part as Lorenzo looks to kick-start his title bid with a much-needed victory atMotorLand Aragó.
