Every month we’ll be coming up with a new place to go on a road trip in the UK. With summer just around the corner, it’s time to start planning your getaway, and the Yorkshire Dales is an ideal location. The area is filled with interesting sights, from the Yorkshire Three Peaks, to Malham Cove. Here are some of the best things to do while you’re there.
Bolton Castle
For anyone who’s interested in history, Bolton Castle is a great place to visit. Built between 1378 and 1399, the castle belonged to Richard le Scrope, the Lord Chancellor to Richard II. Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned at the castle for six months after her defeat at the Battle of Langside in 1568. The castle is well preserved, with many of the original walls remaining.
Yorkshire Three Peaks
The three peaks of Yorkshire consist of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent mountains. They form part of the Pennine range and border the Yorkshire Dales National Park as well. If you scale any of the peaks, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of the valleys below. The Three Peaks walk is considered the original three peak walk in the UK, and many take on the walking challenge every year.
Malham Cove
One of the most beautiful sights in the Yorkshire Dales is Malham Cove. Located north of Malham village, the cove is made up of limestones. The feature was formed more than 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. Rock climbers are able to scale the 260 foot cliff face, though it’s better to do this during the cooler months. During summer, the rock face can become unbearably hot.
Dales Countryside Museum
The Dales Countryside Museum is the perfect place for finding out about local history. Take a trip back in time by looking at various exhibitions that feature items like a gold viking ring and Bronze Age spearhead. In addition to the galleries, there’s an outdoor trail to explore, where all kinds of animals are located.
Grimwith Reservoir
After a long ride, the Grimwith Reservoir is an ideal spot for relaxing. Built in 1864, the reservoir features a small turbine that generates 1400 MWh of electricity. It’s a good place for bird watching, as the reservoir is an important area for wildfowl. Birds that have been seen include northern lapwings, Eurasian wigeons, greylag geese, reed buntings, sedge warblers and ringed plovers.
