Wednesday Watch List: Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird

Each Wednesday our resident second hand bike guru checks out the online auction sites to see what’s piquing his attention. This week, Scott’s picked out a lightly used Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird. Tell us more, o wise one…

If you’re going to buy a Honda Blackbird there’s only one colour option that matches its stealthy credentials. Of course, that colour is black.

The original Blackbird landed in 1996, and it stole the fastest production bike in the world crown from the ageing Kawasaki ZZ-R1100D with a top speed just shy of 180mph.

For £505 short of £10,000 you could have been king of the streets on your new CBR1100XX.

Over two decades later the original carb fed Bird is bordering on full classic bike status.

Finding a good one is still pretty easy to achieve, finding a pearler is much tougher. This P reg Blackbird is real Bobby Dazzler, with only 5,800 miles covered from new. Adding to its kudos is the fact that it’s bog standard, lovely!

A quick spy at the advert blurb reveals she’s had an easy life, having spent its time with just two owners. The first hoarder tucked it away for 20 years while its current owner clocked up another three years.

The pictures look amazing, and the asking price of £3,750 isn’t too ridiculous for a bike of this caliber.

What to look for when buying a Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird.

  • Carburettor models are more desirable than the later fuel injected models if forum chatter is to be believed. Prices for either model start at around £1,500 for a tidy bike with a long MOT.
  • Extras can make or break a bike, thankfully most Blackbird owners spend their cash on sensible bolt ons like luggage, heated grips and quality rear shock absorbers.
  • The handlebars are a little on the low side, but there’s plenty of options available to you to raise them up. These range from bar rising blocks to top yoke conversion kits. A popular mod is to fit VFR800 VTEC bars, the only sting is they can go for up to £150 for a secondhand pair.
