Although it can seem confusing, getting a motorbike insurance quote is actually an incredibly straightforward process. And having all of the relevant information to hand makes the process a very smooth one indeed – that’s why we’ve highlighted the bits and pieces required:
Personal info
As well as the standard name, surname, age, there’s some more specific details required:
- Job information – what you do and where you work can have an effect on your insurance premium. If your job requires you to spend long periods of time on your bike then you could find you have a higher insurance premium.
You will also need to input any part time employment or voluntary jobs you undertake as well.
- Location – your home address should be the place where you live, even if your bike is stored elsewhere. You will however need to make this clear to your insurance provider.
- Convictions – any unspent convictions (including points on your licence) should be made clear here.
Your bike
- Class of use – is your bike used for business, leisure, or both? This is something you’ll need to let the company know about.
- Make, model & engine size – if you’ve got a brand new, more expensive model you’re likely to have a higher premium as these have an increased chance of being stolen and will cost more to fix.
- Modifications – you need to list all modifications and accessories your bike has installed. Even if they were added by the previous owner.
- Security – is your bike kept in a secure location? Is it fitted with a certified alarm or lock? All security measures you have in place need to be made clear here. The more secure your bike is, the cheaper your premium has the potential to be.
- Voluntary excess – how much are you happy to pay towards making a claim? The higher the figure here the lower your insurance policy tends to be.
Your biking history
- Additional motorbike training – if you’ve undertaken additional courses or training as part of learning to ride a motorbike, make sure you have all of these listed here. As they can see you receive a significant discount on your premium.
- No claims history any no claims discount can have an impact on the cost of your insurance. The maximum no claims discount you can have is 9 years. Ensure you contact your insurer to get the exact figure.
- Accidents and claims – these are one of the biggest factors that are taken into account when calculating a quote. Make sure you list of all of these when submitting a motorbike insurance quote.
- Mileage – how many miles do you plan to do annually on your motorbike? If you’re unsure, dig out your old MOT certificates to give you a better indication of the figure.
