Despite Jonathan Rea having safely secured a championship win, there were all sorts of thrills on offer for WorldSBK fans over the weekend, as the final podium positions were thrashed out on the Losail International Circuit in Doha, Qatar.
In the first race of the weekend, Tom Sykes of Kawasaki Racing Team fought a tight contest with Aruba.it Racing’s Xavi Fores, and Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea. Sykes come out on top, emerging in first place after an extremely tense set of challenges that took place during the closing moments of the race, followed by Rea and Fores. Thanks to the win, Sykes took his 30th career Tissot-Superpole, an impressive result.
Race two – the final race of the 2015 calendar – was similarly exciting, with fans being treated to a race-long bout between Leon Haslam and Chaz Davies, who came in first and second place respectively. The pair were followed by Tom Sykes in third place, giving Aprilia a double season win, despite a very slim winning margin of 0.110 seconds.
Rea, hoping to set a WorldSBK record, suffered technical issues on lap six and had to pull out of the race, while Xavi Fores was struck down by illness. Despite these issues both showed amazing skill during the earlier stages of the competition, and will definitely have fans looking forward to the 14th championship in 2016!
