WSBK 2015: Round 6

world-superbike-round-6.jpg

Taking place during a dry and bright bank holiday weekend, round six of the World Superbike championships at the UK’s Donington Park was off to a great start. With no huge surprises in this round of the Superbike World Championships, the standings remain relatively stable with Rea, Haslam and Sykes yet again leading the way. At this stage in the competition, it appears that team GB have all three medals firmly within their grasp.

The opening 23-lap race at the Leicestershire circuit was won by Britain’s Tom Sykes, after a long, drawn out struggle between himself and Britain’s other favourite – fellow Kawasaki teammate Jonathan Rea. Following 16 winless races, Sykes has nevertheless won the last five World Superbike races on home turf.

However, storming ahead of the pack with 280 points to his name, Jonathan Rea is a solid 101 points ahead of Britain’s other top contender Leon Haslam, of Aprilia Racing’s Red Devils. Chaz Davies continues to hold fourth position, though at Donington Park he managed to claim the third podium position in round seven of the WSBK.

The season’s standings reveal that Alex Lowes has 71 points – just one point behind the Ducati team’s Matteo Baiocco. With Ducati’s Leandro Mercado just one point behind Lowes, there’s still every chance the tables will turn once again in round seven of the World Superbike race.
