Yamaha YZF-R3: A New Lightweight Supersport Bike

The newest member of Yamaha’s R-Series, the YZF-R3, was unveiled last week.

The new A2-licence category motorcycle is intended to be an entry-level supersport model, combining aggressive looks, comfort and ease of riding to appeal to all skill levels.

It comes with a 321cc, liquid-cooled, in-line two-cylinder, DOHC, fuel injected engine which the manufacturer says is tuned to deliver excellent power and performance throughout the powerband.

Classic R-Series styling with dual headlight fairing and aerodynamic bodywork gives the YZF-R3 a racetrack look and the low seat height of 30.7 inches makes it suitable for beginner riders as well as those who just prefer a lightweight, nimble machine.

Other features of the YZF-R3 include KYB front suspension, lightweight aluminium 10-spoke wheels and a newly designed compact LCD instrument panel. The bike will come in a choice of three colour options: Team Yamaha Blue/Matte Silver, Rapid Red and Raven.

The YZF-R3 fits into Yamaha’s supersport range between the popular YZF-R125 and the race-winning YZF-R6, offering a logical next step for riders wanting to move up from a 125.

It is expected to be available in UK dealerships from April 2015. Pricing has not yet been announced, but in America the new model will cost $4,990 (£3,088).

The YZF-R3 was one of seven new motorcycles introduced by Yamaha on the opening day of last week’s AIMExpo event in North America, alongside the Bolt C-Spec, the SMax sport scooter, the WR250F and YZ250FX (two off-road motorcycles), and the Star Stryker and Star Raider Bullet Cowl.
