Honda made a surprise launch in Milan last night as it pulled the covers off the CB125R, a new competitor for the Aprilia Tuono 125, KTM Duke 125 and Yamaha MT-125 in the highly competitive naked learner class.

The new model is part of a new Neo Sports Café range that includes the CB300R and CB1000R and while the litre bike was always expected to be unveiled following a teaser campaign and the showcase of a prototype in Tokyo last month, the smaller versions come as a surprise and confirm that Honda has Yamaha’s MT range firmly in its sights.

Where previous Honda 125s have generally been on the budget side, the CB125R is dripping with top end equipment and weighs in at a super-light 125.8kg, less than Suzuki’s GSX-S125, which has recently arrived in showrooms. The engine comes from the tried and tested CBR125R, which puts out just over 13bhp but is slightly short of the 11kW/14.75bhp upper limit for A1 licence bikes.

Honda has given the CB125R a new steel chassis with 41mm upside down forks, a radially mounted four-piston caliper brake up front and an adjustable rear shock. The spec sheet also includes full LED lighting, an LCD dashboard, sophisticated ABS, controlled by an inertia measurement unit, and decent Dunlop tyres.

 

Honda has yet to confirm the price or availability dates for the new CB125R but should be known in time for Motorcycle Live, later this month, where the bike will make it’s UK debut.
