Yamaha has announced a replacement for its ever popular YBR125 – the YS125.

Darling of riding schools around the world, the best selling YBR125 was killed off by increasingly tightening emissions regulations. Like its predecessor, which sold over 150,000 units around Europe over the past decade, the YS125 features a simple powerplant that’s been updated from the YBR.

What you get is a fuel-injected two-valve single that’s air-cooled yet still meeting Euro 4 regulations. The YS125 features a new cylinder design with a longer stroke of 57.9mm. The cylinder head is also heavily revised, and it has a traditional kickstarter too – something of a novelty in 2017!

The chassis has also been updated with more contemporary styling and a larger, 14 litre, fuel tank which Yamaha says should make the YS125 good for 200 miles between refills. The old YBR125 was already famously light on fuel, and Yamaha claim that the new model is even more efficient.

Seat height on the YS125 is up 15mm on its predecessor, at 795mm, which looks to give it a wider appeal. The old YBR was a popular bike that appealed to everyone from learners looking for a first ride to earn their stripes on to commuters looking for a cheap, cheerful and reliable way to get to work and at a featherweight 129kg, the YS125 should be extremely nimble in traffic. The new model also has linked brakes, which the manufacturer claims gives ‘more controllability’.

Yamaha are offering a range of accessories for the YS125, including a sports screen, rear rack and top box. It comes in three colours Midnight Black, Power Red and Competition White, and will cost a few hundred pounds more than the outgoing YBR, £2799, when it goes on sale next month.
