Hungary is a wonderful country to visit as there’s a lot of history in the region. From Budapest to Visegrad, there’s a lot to enjoy.
Budapest
Budapest is a beautiful city that has plenty to see. Start by visiting the Hungarian Parliament Building that features Neo-Gothic architecture. Located in the Lajos Kossuth Square, it’s the largest building in Hungary. The main facade, which overlooks the River Danube, displays Hungarian and Transylvanian rulers.
Next, check out the Jewish Quarter which houses The Great Synagogue. The Fisherman’s Bastion is also an impressive sight. It’s a fortress that features fairytale towers and offers panoramic views of the city.
Szentendre
After leaving Budapest you can stop off in the historical town of Szentendre. The town is full of museums and galleries, such as the Bela Czobel Museum and Jeno Barcsay Collection. Both were famous artists who lived in the town. The Open-Air Ethnographic Museum is the most well known and it’s full of outdoor exhibits.
Visegrad
While making your way down the bank of the Danube, you’ll come across the town of Visegrad. The Visegrad Citadel is the stand out attraction, containing an upper and lower castle. It was the home of King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century. The Upper Castle was used to guard the Hungarian royal insignia between the 14th century and 1526.
Esztergom
While in Hungary you’ll also want to check out Esztergom, the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church. Start by visiting the famous Basilica. With a Neo-Classicist style, the Basilica is a beautiful building. Inside, the walls are decorated with Tuscan Renaissance motifs. It’s the rarest example of Renaissance art in Hungary.
Visiting the Watertown is also recommended. This is the part of Esztergom that’s built near the Danube, where you’ll find fortresses and baroque churches.
The reconstructed royal palace is also worth seeing because it features a museum that will allow you to step back in time.
Siofok
