A Glimpse Into The World Of Classic Car Photography

The world of classic cars involves more than collecting your favourite vehicle. Many collectors like to put their cars on display, and a great way to do that is to get one photographed. Photography allows you to tell a story and that is the belief of classic car photographer Gerrit Glockner.

Glockner is the director of Bildermeister, a company that offers professional photo shoots for classic cars. Bildermeister scouts locations before the shoot to create the most tasteful environment for a vehicle. The locations include old repair shops and abandoned factories that can illustrate the heritage of a specific car. Glockner started Bildermeister around a decade ago. “Bildermeister’s signature is that we offer private customers the chance to conveniently acquire great photos of their cars in special locations.”

Glockner recently set up a shoot for Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and a Pagoda. He delighted in talking about the stories that come out of photographing classic cars. “The owner of the SLS discovered that the W113 actually belonged to his father and he’d ridden in the car as a five-year old. A simple small detail on the dashboard had stretched the autobiographical arc of this car over several decades. I had a poster of a white Lamborghini Countach on my wall. Last year, I had a customer ask me to photograph his one. He told me he had the exact same poster hung in his nursery.”

The photo sessions give customers a chance to network and make new friends. Once the shoot is over, customers receive a leather-bound volume for their collection. Glockner’s photography also adds value to a classic car because the vehicles sell better when they are captured in such detail. According to Glockner “a good 20% of my customers return to my shoots each year because they’ve sold their old car with the help of my photos and now want to show their new acquisitions in the right light.”

Classic vehicle photography is certainly a different perspective on the motor industry. Would you ever consider getting your classic car photographed?
