A Guide To Becoming A Classic Car Collector

Getting your first classic car is a milestone for any motor enthusiast. They are prized for their beauty and style and driving them on the road is liberating. But some people might want to go further than owning one. If you find yourself with enough money to start a collection it’s important to know what you want and how to find the cars. We’ve put together a guide on how start your classic car collection.

Consider your first classic car before anything else

The first classic car will set the tone for the rest of the collection, so get something that’s low maintenance and fairly affordable. Buying a reliable car is better than getting a broken down motor that will take years to turn into something usable. Drive it for a while and see how you feel about maintaining it for a few months. Once you’ve got settled with the vehicle you can start thinking about what other cars you want to own.

Figure out what kind of collector you want to be

With so much choice out there, it’s important to know what kind of collector you want to be. Are you a fan of a certain brand? Collectors like Chris Evans appreciates Ferraris and owns a lot of them. Maybe you’d like to own a lot of different cars like Jay Leno. Leno has a varied collection, featuring Bentleys, Jaguars and Duesenbergs. Decide what sort of collector you are and then go after the cars.

Finding the right classic car

Using the internet is the best way to track down your classic cars. Search for reliable classic car dealers online and make sure you carry out a thorough investigation. When looking at an online auction site, there will be a type of feedback system that let other buyers know what is a good deal based on their experience.

Be sure to check out the pictures of each vehicle, as a trustworthy seller has nothing to hide. If a certain angle of the car isn’t available then ask the seller to provide one. Then, check each car in person to make sure you’re happy with what you see.

Being part of a classic car club is another great way of finding deals. You’ll be able to swap advice with other enthusiasts and they could point you in the right direction if you’re after a specific make.

Maintaining Your Collection

After you’ve built up a selection of cars you need to consider how you’re going to maintain them. This means finding a place to store them all and ensuring you have the right amount of space. Remember that each car will need an individual amount of care, based on model, age and specifications.

Starting a classic car collection is an admirable goal and one that should be pursued if you can afford it. As classic car insurance brokers, we provide coverage for a number of classic cars, including Porsches and Jaguars.
