Southend seafront will play host to a number of classic car rallies that are due to start on Sunday March 30 this year, the Echo has reported.?Up to 20 enthusiasts are expected to turn up to the events with their pre-1970s vehicles. They will display their cars in areas of City Beach, and will be treated to a free breakfast in one of the seafront restaurants.
The following dates of the rallies are: Sunday April 27, May 25, June 22 and September 28.
Derek Jarvis, Southend Council’s chancellor for tourism and culture, commented that classic vehicles always create a sense of nostalgia for people who used to drive them. Rallies are also a great opportunity to see the cars that are normally in films in real-life, he added.
The second meeting date coincides with national Drive It Day, which is organised by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. This event was created in honour of the 64 cars that left the UK capital in April 1900 for a 1,000 mile trial, and is aimed at inspiring enthusiasts to get their classic cars on the road.
Members of the South Eastern Vintage and Classic Vehicle club will be participating in the Southend Seafront rally in April. On July 13, the club will also be hosting the 21st anniversary of its London to Southend Classic Vehicle Run. Organiser of the event, Roger Petheram, said that in the 1950s people used to drive their cars to the seafront with a picnic, and they hope to re-create this with the event.
