This May, BMW scored a new record related to its motorcycles and maxi scooters segment. In a statement, the BMW Motorrad unit of the Bavarian brand said it sold the highest number of two-wheelers for the month of May in its 90-year-long history.
Sales of motorcycles and maxi scooters were 7.7% higher than in May last year, with the company selling 14,088 units compared to 13,081 in 2013.
BMW Motorrad said its motorcycle and scooter sales delivered stable growth for the fifth consecutive month, helping the group reach an all-time high in the number of bikes and scooters sold in the first five months of the year. In January-May 2014 the company sold 59,151 two-wheelers, a rise of 12.9% over the same period last year.
According to Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad head of sales and marketing, there were four models that fuelled this remarkable growth for BMW - the R 1200RT, the R 1200GS Adventure, the R nineT and the new S 1000R sport bike.
BMW enhanced its racing fame recently, following the wins Michael Dunlop achieved in almost all races in this year's Isle of Man TT, including the Senior TT one, and claimed the Joey Dunlop Trophy for the second time in a row.
Dunlop's success in the motorcycle races around the Snaefell Mountain came 75 years after Georg Meier's historic win in 1939.
The German giant is now preparing for the biggest BMW Motorrad rally in the world, BMW Motorrad Days, which will take place from 4 to 6 July in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
