They might serve a full English but the Ace Cafe is going all continental this weekend as it welcomes visitors from across Europe for its 20th annualReunion Weekend & Ride.
A veritable cavalcade of bikers is heading from Solingen, near Dusseldorf to London’s North Circular Road for the three-day event which also includes The Brighton Burn Up and Ride With The Rockers. Departing from Solingen’s Café Hubraum and collecting riders along the way, the European contingent is due to arrive on Friday for the three-day reunion party.
They, and the hundreds of UK bikers set to attend, are in for a real feast – and not just from the Ace’s famous breakfast menu! The action starts on Friday with live music and a burlesque show which may possibly be as steamy as the 1951 locomotive set to power past the café the following morning! Then follows the Café Racers & Rockers Ride Out which will head south across the river to Battersea Park, before returning to the Ace for the Café Racer Review awards and prize-giving.
Other Saturday attractions include roller derby hotshots the London Rockin Rollers, top biking author Mick Duckworth – who’ll be signing copies of his authoritative history of the café, Ace Times – and more live entertainment.
Sunday means the seaside as the Brighton Burn Up & Ride with the Rockers hits at 10.30am. It promises to be a grand day out as bikers gather on the East Sussex coast to catch stunt displays, enjoy live music and soak up the atmosphere at what has become one of biking’s great annual gatherings. Naturally there’s prize-giving too as the city’s Madeira Drive hosts both Scooter and Streetfighter competitions – with the cream of the crop on show, these are always good for a gawp.
Among trade stands in Brighton – and back in London over the weekend – you’ll find those lovable Carole Nash calendar girls and plenty of bike insurance specialists on hand to offer advice and dole out the freebies.
Watch out too for this year’s special guest, Steve McLaughlin; winner of the first ever Daytona AMA Superbike race and founder of the WSBK championship. He’s a man for whom we have a lot to thank and, no doubt, a man with some cracking tales to tell.
* The 20th annual Ace Café Reunion Weekend & Ride takes place from Friday September 13th – Sunday September 15th. Entry to all events is free. For a full programme of attractions and details of the Brighton run route, click here.
