Husqvarna confirms electric motorcycle and scooter for 2022

Husky e-bikes

Stefan Pierer, the overall boss of Husqvarna and sister companies KTM and GasGas, has officially confirmed new all-electric e-Pilen and e-Scooter models will be on sale in 2022.

While the scooter was previously announced in late 2019, the new e-Pilen is the first time a motorcycle powered by an electric motor has been part of the plan.

The announcement was part of a presentation made by Pierer to Pierer Mobility company investors, showing company performance and future plans.

Two new all-electric models have been confirmed – the e-Pilen which clearly takes styling cues from the likes of the existing Husqvarna Vitpilen models – and an e-Scooter with two power variants of 4kW and 13kW being listed.

There are no more details on the two models and the only visuals available are the two concept sketches which were released as part of the original presentation, but it does appear the 5kW version of the e-Pilen is set to share a similar driveshaft layout at the e-Scooter.

There are two electric bikes in KTM’s current range. This entry-level model is a 5kW electric bike in KTM’s current motocross range in the form of the SX-E 5 model which is an electric competition bike aimed at rivalling petrol 50cc versions.

The more powerful 9kW model is the KTM Freeride E-XC electric enduro bike which is an adult-sized bike and aims to be a direct rival for the petrol Freeride model. The battery can be easily swapped for another if it runs out.

Husqvarna was brought under the ownership of KTM in 2013 after the famous brand spent an expensive and ultimately unsuccessful time under BMW ownership. Despite huge investment in creating new road bikes, the brand failed to take off.

KTM has now given the brand a completely new start and as a motocross manufacturer are selling in huge numbers; especially in North America. The road bike range is new and is, so far, struggling to make much of a sales impact anywhere, despite sharing many components with their KTM counterparts. It will be interesting to see if the development of electric powered models will allow for greater separation of the two brands, and gives Husqvarna the opportunity to find its niche in an otherwise crowded marketplace.
