Suzuki ride retro train with two new GSX-8 derivatives

suzuki-800tt-t-4065

Suzuki has introduced two new models into the middleweight retro class, with the GSX-8T and GSX-8TT playing on the company’s heritage and going up against the likes of Kawasaki’s RS models and the Yamaha XSR range in the showrooms.

Built around the critically-acclaimed GSX-8 platform, the classically styled sporty roadsters draw their inspiration from sporty Suzuki models of old, with the GSX-8TT clearly inspired by the bikini-faired GS1000S superbike – the famed ‘Wes Cooley replica’ which topped the Suzuki range in the late 1970s.

Both models use the grunty, 82bhp, 776cc 270° parallel twin engine as found in the GSX-8S and GSX-8R. They also utilise the same steel frame, with aluminium swingarm, and run modern style inverted KYB forks.

Compared to the more contemporary styled ‘S’ and ‘R’ the retros get new 16.5 litre fuel tanks, seat units, roll and tuck style upholstery and wide, tapered aluminium, handlebars. The ‘bars get trendy bar end mirrors as standard, with the GSX-8TT shrouding the traditional round headlamp with the handlebar mounted fairing.

Much like the MT-based Yamaha XSR700 and XSR900, the new Suzukis are thoroughly modern under the retro bodywork. From the radially mounted Nissin brakes to an electronics suite which includes multiple power modes, traction control, quickshifter and a colour TFT screen as standard, we fully expect the new Suzukis to be fun and engaging to ride.

We’re big fans of the GSX-8S and GSX-8R at Insidebikes, and these new retros should be a new way to enjoy the soulful parallel-twin motors.

The new models are expected to arrive in British dealerships in a few weeks’ time, priced at £9,599 for the naked GSX-8T, with the faired TT costing £400 more.

The GSX-8T has a matt black seat unit, brushed radiator shrouds, gold forks and black wheels, with the choice of either Candy Burnt Gold, Metallic Matt Steel Green or Metallic Matt Black for the fuel tank.

The 8TT is a bit more colourful, with racing stripes on the tank and fairing and two colour options: Glass Sparkle (with red wheels and red and gold decals) or a Pearl Matt Shadow Green option, which complemented by gold wheels and gold and bronze stripes.
