When it comes to motorbike insurance, there are generally three main levels available, and each one can cover you in different ways.
Getting a quote for bike insurance with Carole Nash couldn’t be easier, but you’ll need to make sure you choose the right level of insurance that’s going to fully cover you in the event of a claim.
Comprehensive cover
This is the highest level of motorbike insurance that you can choose, and will cover you if you’re involved in an accident or incident where you were deemed to be at fault. Even when the accident was your fault, this level of cover will still pay out for damages to your motorbike.
Comprehensive insurance also covers anybody else involved (also known as the ‘third party’) along with their vehicles as well. If the third party’s vehicle needs any repairs, then this level of cover will ensure that they are paid if an accident is found to be your fault. By choosing this level of motorbike insurance, you’ll also be covered for fire and theft. Meaning if your bike is damaged due to fire, or stolen, you will still be covered.
In order to insure yourself you would need to add Personal Accident Insurance, which can cover you in the event of specified serious injuries or death, with up to £21,000 worth of cover for accidental bodily injury following a motorcycle accident.
What about if I break down?
Breakdown cover is not included with many comprehensive motorbike insurance policies. However, all comprehensive motorbike insurance policies purchased through Carole Nash do include breakdown cover.
Third Party, Fire and Theft
This level of insurance won’t pay out if you have an accident that was your fault, but it will cover the ‘third party’. So, if anyone else was involved in the accident, they will be able to claim compensation for any damage which was your fault.
Third Party, Fire and Theft will cover your motorbike for any damage caused by fire, or if it was stolen.
Third Party Only
The minimum level of motorbike insurance that you can choose is Third Party Only, which as the name implies, will only cover the costs of damage or injury to another person or their vehicle.
This level of cover won’t insure you or your bike if you have an accident, and it won’t cover your repair costs.
Cover for Social, Domestic and Pleasure
When you’re getting a quote for motorbike insurance, you’ll need to inform the insurer exactly how you use your bike. If it’s just for Social, Domestic and Pleasure, then you can choose a level of cover that will insure you for visiting family, friends, going shopping, or taking journeys for leisure purposes.
Cover for Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting
The above level of insurance is not designed to cover you if you travel to and from a permanent workplace. For that you’ll need to specify to your insurer that you use your bike for commuting purposes as well.
It’s always worth checking with your insurer what they count as commuting. If you have an accident without having the right level of cover in place, your insurance may be void.
Pillion Cover
Pillion refers to when someone is riding behind another person on their motorbike, as a passenger. If you’re the over of the motorcycle and you intend to take passengers, then you’ll need pillion cover on your motorbike insurance.
Generally speaking, most policies will require you to add this level of cover on if you want to carry passengers. Failing to do so will cause your insurance policy to become invalid.
