Will mini BMW S 1000 RR make it to Europe?

Two decades ago sports bikes were all the rage, but nowadays 600cc supersport bikes have been consigned to the history books and sales of new litre superbikes more likely to be counted in double digits than the thousands they shipped out in during their heyday. Even so, there’s still a fondness for sports bikes – especially with young riders – and while machines like the Kawasaki Ninja 400, KTM RC 390 and Yamaha R3 may not be huge sellers, but they’re doing reasonably well in the showrooms. And now there’s a new offering – the BMW G 310 RR.

At least there is in India, where it is built by BMW partner TVS alongside the G 310 R and G 310 GS we get here. At present there’s no official word as to whether or not it will be on sale in Europe, but we reckon that it would look perfectly at home in BMW’s ever expanding small motorcycle range.

The little BMW is almost identical to TVS’ own Apache RR, which has been on sale for a few years now, but the appearance of a version wearing the more prestigious BMW propellor badge suggests that the model may be set to go global.

We think it looks a million dollars. Styling naturally echoes BMW’s current corporate design language, and with the distinctive BMW Motorsport livery it has something of the range topping S 1000 RR superbike about it – at least from a distance!

With a 312cc single cylinder motor making just 34bhp, the G 310 RR is not exactly going to deliver superbike performance – nor is it likely to make an appearance in Supersport 300 racing alongside the aforementioned (and more powerful) rivals from Kawasaki, KTM and Yamaha – but as an A2 compliant road bike with kerb appeal to younger riders we can definitely see there being a market for it to be sold in the BMW range alongside the £4970 G 310 R roadster and the adventure styled G 310 GS, which costs £5630.
