Yamaha R125 get facelift and tech updates for 2023

Yamaha_R125

We know modern day learner legal machines aren’t the super exciting, ball-busting two strokes from years ago, but there’s still some supercool machinery you can ride around on your CBT.

Manufacturers are still working hard to create the coolest machinery within the licencing restrictions, and Yamaha’s R125 is up there with the smartest in terms of its appearance and its capabilities. And for 2023, Yamaha have given it a little more edge.

Inspired by the flagship R1 superbike, the little R125 still looks a million dollars. Although the engine and chassis remain the same as before, the R125 gets a big facelift with design that’s in keeping with the rest of Yamaha’s R family and particularly reminiscent of the mid-range R7 in terms of its sharp lines, sleek design and the headlight that’s now hidden in the front air duct. As far as tech goes it’s now been given a 5” colour TFT dash with Bluetooth connectivity, which has been complimented by a new top yoke and switchgear set.

Alongside this, the ’23 R125 now comes equipped with a new assist and slipper, Michelin Pilot Street tyres and pre-wiring for an option quickshifter, not to mention a traction control system too. The engine is as before, utilising the full 11kw allowed for A1 category motorbikes and using variable valve timing technology for strong delivery throughout the rev range.

Yamaha will be hoping the updates keep the R125 ahead of a very competitive class, which includes the Aprilia RS 125 and KTM RC 125.

Although there’s no word yet on price or availability, we expect a small increase on the 2022 model’s £5000 price tag, with the latest examples in Yamaha dealers from early 2023.
