Not taxing your car can lead to it being impounded, though it’s not the only thing that you could lose. The DVLA recently released a list of everyday items that have been found in clamped cars over the past year. A fair share of unusual products exist among the collection. The following has been recovered:

  • Lawnmower
  • A box of hard hats
  • Two vacuum cleaners
  • Off-road quad bike
  • Segway
  • Three angle grinders
  • Fishing rods and tackle
  • Half a corner sofa
  • Full set of golf clubs
  • Torsos belonging to male mannequins
  • Bathroom toilet with seat
  • Acoustic guitar with accessories, stand and carry-case
  • ‘Beavis & Butthead’ trading cards
  • Full drum kit complete with Cort ‘Groove Engine GE15B’ amplifier set
  • Louis Wain book of illustrated cats from 1920s

Other pricey items to be discovered included Gucci sunglasses, game consoles and home appliances. Tim Burton, DVLA’s Head of Enforcement, said “Having your car clamped is expensive and inconvenient – and as this list of items shows, you could end up losing more than just the car! DVLA operates a range of measures to make vehicle tax easy to pay and hard to avoid.”

“While the vast majority of motorists do the right thing and tax their cars correctly, it is right that we take action against those that break the law and fail to tax their car. It’s never been easier to tax your car – it’s just a few clicks to do it online and you can do it 24 hours a day. You can also spread payments across the year by Direct Debit, so there really is no excuse. The law is clear and so are the consequences – tax it or lose it.”

Drivers can check when their car tax is due by using the DVLA’s online service. All you need is the registration number of your vehicle.
