Budget bike brand Lexmoto looks set to add to the growing number of sub-400cc sportsbikes currently on sale, after confirming that it is testing a new 380cc, two-cylinder, version of its existing LXR model.
The Devon-based company, which imports Chinese assembled bikes developed to its own specifications, showcased a prototype at the annual British motorcycle dealer expo, which is currently taking place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.
Up to now, Lexmoto have only offered machines in the sub-125cc category, making them ideal for learner riders and commuters. The LXR380 is an evolution of Lexmoto’s current flagship, the track-inspired £2200 LXR125, which runs a liquid cooled single cylinder 124cc engine in a sporty trellis frame that has more than a hint of KTM’s RC 125 about it.
Lexmoto confirmed that their R&D department is currently testing the 380cc twin, with a view to it going on sale in the summer.
At around 30bhp, the Lexmoto LXR is unlikely to challenge the established bikes in the class (namely the KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 400 and Yamaha YZF-R3) in the performance stakes, although the numbers look favourable alongside 25bhp Suzuki’s GSX250R.
Even if performance can’t quite match the best in class, the styling looks right on point, with upside down front forks, a race replica fairing and thoroughly modern LED lights. The Lexmoto even sports a pair of radially mounted front, wavy pattern, disc brakes (with the compulsory ABS) in a class where a single stopper is the norm.
Although no indication of prices has been made, expect Lexmoto to have the competition licked in that department. The company takes great pride in offering value for money with their bikes, so expect the new LXR to deliver more of the same with a price that undercuts the more established bikes in the class.
