Even with a global pandemic, BMW Motorrad have had their very best year to date.

Although 2021 was a year littered with difficulties from a pandemic to parts shortages, BMW Motorrad have recorded their best year to date, selling a whopping 194,261 bikes globally, which is a 14.8% rise on the 169,272 sold in 2020.

This is thanks to growth all over the globe, with sales increasing near enough everywhere. They were up by 15.2% in Italy, 14.4% in Spain, 13.4% in France, 21.4% in China and a whopping 32.1% in the USA, which adds up to a seriously record-breaking year for the German motorcycle marque. UK sales grew by 26.6% too, with 9,263 bikes flying out of showrooms on our shores alone.

As far as machinery goes, the R 1250 GS and GS Adventure were responsible for a huge amount of success as they sold a massive 60,000 units alone. This, alongside the other boxers in the range made up almost half of total sales, with bikes like the R 1250 RT tourer selling impressively too.

Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad seemed like a very happy chap with the news, saying: "The fact that we still managed to finish 2021 with this fantastic result for BMW Motorrad not only makes me happy, but also incredibly proud. It’s precisely in times of crisis where you can see how well a team sticks together.

“This year, I would therefore like to express my special thanks to all employees as well as to the BMW Motorrad business partners, who made this success possible thanks to their personal commitment and flexibility. My sincere thanks also goes to our customers for their loyalty, trust and support."

BMW’s good news comes on the back of a similar announcement from Ducati, who sold a record 59,447 motorbikes in 2021 – suggesting that for all the doom and gloom surrounding certain sectors of the motorcycle industry, sales at the premium end of the market remain strong globally.
