The 2013 World Superbike Championship calendar has been finalised, with a new Turkish round added as well as confirmation that Silverstone will host the British round.
The Istanbul Park circuit, which hosted the Turkish Formula One Grand Prix until 2011, will play host to World Superbikes on September 13-15. The date was previously marked as ‘TBA’ on provisional calendars and the move to Turkey effectively comes at the expense of Brno in the Czech Republic.
It has previously been speculated that the Turkish round would come at the expense of a British round, with reports that Silverstone was looking for a release from the final year of its four-year deal to host WSB. However, Silverstone bosses last week denied the speculation.
The Istanbul Park hasn’t hosted a top-level motorcycle event since a MotoGP event in 2007 which was won by Casey Stoner. Two previous MotoGP events were won by current WSB rider Marco Melandri when he raced for Honda.
In addition to the confirmation of the Turkish round, the events at Portimao and Imola – which were both listed as ‘subject to contract’ – have now firmed their respective June 9th and June 30th dates.
