At Carole Nash, we’ve been one of the UK’s leading motorbike insurance experts long enough to know that everyone wants a good deal on their policy. Thankfully, if you’re a moped rider, you’ve chosen a vehicle that is one of the cheapest to insure.
We act as a specialist broker, so you can easily arrange your cover through us, and we’ll make sure your moped insurance quote is tailored to you.
What are the different levels of moped insurance?
Insurance for scooters and mopeds typically comes in three forms, each offering varying levels of protection. They are known as third-party only; third-party, fire and theft; and comprehensive.
This tier of moped insurance offers you a basic level of protection. It provides cover for a third party’s vehicle or property if you are at fault for an accident involving your moped. You are not insured for accidental damage, fire or the theft of your own scooter.
Third-party, fire and theft
This form of scooter insurance means you are covered in the event of fire damage or the theft of your vehicle as well as the third-party protection mentioned above.
Fully comprehensive moped insurance offers you the greatest level of protection. It provides all the cover included in a third-party, fire and theft policy as well as insurance for your own vehicle if you accidentally damage it.
What comes as standard with your moped insurance?
Not only are we a leading provider of moped insurance quotes in the UK, you’ll get all this as standard when you come to Carole Nash:
Legal expenses cover
Up to £100,000 in motorcycle legal expenses. This covers your legal costs to help you recover a policy excess, loss of earnings, hire of another vehicle and compensation for any injury you suffer as a result of an accident which is not your fault.
UK & European breakdown cover
Nobody wants to be left stranded, which is why all Carole Nash scooter insurance policies come with accident and breakdown recovery for the UK and the EU, which also includes Homestart assistance worth over £100 (when compared to other providers). Please note that to benefit from breakdown cover outside the UK you will require a Green Card, which we can provide for you.
Carole Nash Rider Cover
As any rider knows, sometimes you need to use someone else’s set of wheels. Whatever the reason for that, we don’t want insurance worries to hold you back. As long as both bikes are covered by comprehensive policies, Carole Nash Rider Cover can allow you to feel the thrill of another's set of wheels.

Why would your scooter insurance not pay out?
There are some circumstances which may invalidate your moped insurance. These include, but are not limited to, any liability, accident, injury, loss or damage that occurs when your scooter is:
- In the charge of anyone not entitled to ride it under the certificate of insurance
- Being ridden by someone without an appropriate licence
- Being used to transport passengers or goods in a manner which is likely to affect its safe driving
The above are just some of the instances that may mean you are not protected by your scooter insurance cover. For a list of all exclusions, please refer to your policy document.

Moped Insurance FAQs
We understand you might have some queries about scooter insurance and the cover your policy offers you. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions to hopefully provide the answers you need.
Moped insurance prices can vary widely depending on a number of factors, so there’s no set answer to this question. The cost of your policy is likely to change in line with the level of cover you choose, the make and model of your scooter, your age, where you live and the security measures you have in place to store and keep your vehicle safe.
There are a number of things you can do to earn a discount on your scooter insurance quote:
- Be sure to accurately check your annual mileage by looking at past MOTs.
- Lock up your moped using a chain and, if possible, keep it safely stored in a shed, garage or other secure unit.
- Enrol on approved training courses to improve your riding.
- Maintain your moped insurance all year round as this will enhance your no claims bonus.

Comprehensive moped insurance certainly offers you the highest level of protection and affords you the greatest peace of mind. You’ll be covered for damage to your bike, any damage to a third party and for fire and theft. Every rider’s situation is different, so the right solution for one might not be suitable for another, but comprehensive moped insurance can prove cheaper than third-party cover, so it’s certainly an option worth exploring.
Compulsory Basic Training, or CBT, is typically a requirement before you can ride a moped on the road and as a result you need to have it to be considered eligible for insurance. There are some exceptions, however, such as when you’re riding a moped with an engine up to 50cc.
Yes, we can amend your moped insurance policy. All you have to do is call 0333 005 7555 to let us know of any changes and we can update your premium as well as talk about your renewal. If you’re unsure whether you should be telling us about any changes to your circumstances, please just get in touch to check.
This will depend on your cover and your insurer. However, our policies mean you can ride in the EU with the same level of protection you’d receive in the UK as long as you have a Green Card. The period for which you can ride abroad can span up to 90 days, but this can also vary between insurers. If you’re planning to ride outside the European Economic Area, you’ll also need to acquire a Green Card.
You could be, but you’ll need to check your moped insurance certificate and your policy documents. You can also take advantage of our Rider Cover, which protects you whenever you borrow a friend’s scooter – as long as you have their permission and both of you have comprehensive cover.
Your scooter insurance documents should be with you via email within 24 hours. If you’ve opted to receive them by post, that can take up to five working days.
