If you asked a hundred people to name a classic American car, we imagine that the Ford Mustang would be the most popular answer. First introduced in 1964, the Ford Mustang was a sleek and sporty coupe to appeal to the ‘baby boomers’ of the 1960s. Early generations were phenomenally popular and continue to be so on both sides of the Atlantic, no doubt helped by numerous appearances on the silver screen in films like Gone in Sixty Seconds, Diamonds are Forever, Goldfinger and, of course, Bullitt with Steve McQueen.

Better known as the ‘T-Bird’, the Ford Thunderbird was first manufactured from 1955 until its eleventh generation in 2002. Described by Ford as the first “personal luxury car”, the T-Bird, particularly the convertible version, is an icon of classic Americana.

With a huge firebird bonnet graphic covering a powerful V8 engine, few cars have as much presence as a classic Pontiac Firebird. In particular, the memorable black and gold Firebird Trans Am from the movie Smokey and the Bandit. Today, the models from the 1970s remain the most popular and head-turning style.

The first-generation Pontiac GTO is a muscle car classic of the 1960s and 1970s, with importance placed on performance and racing; first generation GTOs could be fitted with a 325bhp 6.4-litre V8 and many tuners were able to extract even more power. Almost every generation of Pontiac GTO has become collectible and makes an imposing presence on UK roads.

The Chevrolet Corvette is considered by many as ‘America’s first sports car’ and over 60 years later it still maintains a reputation for impressive performance and sporting prowess. Not forgetting incredible looks too, from the gorgeous convertibles of the 1950s models to the sharply styled Sting Ray models of the 60s, through to the powerfully styled third generation of the 70s and 80s, few cars can offer the same level of desirability.
