BMW M 1000 XR prototype revealed

BMW continues its 100-year anniversary celebrations with a new M 1000 XR machine. In short, the new bike is an upgraded M-version of the existing S 1000 XR. It promises to combine long-range capability and supersports riding dynamics, and work both on road and track.

The timing of the unveiling was fortunate for BMW, as it happened on the same day as Peter Hickman took another M-model, his FHO Racing BMW M 1000 RR, to Isle of Man Superstock TT victory.

The M 1000 XR follows in the tyre tracks of the M 1000 RR and M 1000 R, and as you’d expect from the use of the M moniker, it is geared for performance and exclusivity.

Unsurprisingly, powering the new bike will be the 200hp four-cylinder engine with ShiftCam technology for variable valve timing, lifted from the company’s S 1000 RR super sports bike.

The combination of a powerful engine, low(ish) weight of 223kg fully fuelled, and advanced aerodynamics means that the bike will be capable of around 174mph top speed.

Further weight reduction and ‘increased riding dynamics’ can be achieved with the M Competition Package, which will be available as an optional extra.

BMW says that the M winglets, designed to ensure stability at high speeds, give you a chance to ride with greater stability, benefit from a lower wheelie tendency, and accelerate earlier thanks to the aerodynamic downforce. For track use especially, they also mean that the traction control system has to regulate less, more drive power is converted into acceleration, and the rider achieves a faster lap time.

Similarly appealing to more sporty riders are the seating position that is ‘specifically front-wheel-oriented’ for better bike control, as well as the Superbike World Championship-inspired M brakes that also feature in the M RR and the M R.

That’s all we know so far… BMW will publish further information on the new M 1000 XR in the second half of 2023.
