Carole Nash Survey Reveals Which UK Cities Have The Safest Riders

Wearing the right gear is an essential part of motorbike riding and we carried out a study to see how safe people are. Based on the responses of over 1000 active riders in the UK and Ireland, we found that two thirds of UK motorbike owners are riding in unsafe leathers. The statistics showed that 66% of riders were unsure of the recommended thickness for their leathers and 72% were unaware of the recommended thickness for riding boots.

The study covered different safety aspects, including recommended safety gear, back protectors, riding leathers and helmets. The research found that safety isn’t a main priority when buying new leathers, with 56% of riders prioritising price over safety. 49% of riders focused on style when choosing new gear.

This data was also used to determine which city had the safest riders. The following cities were found to be the safest:

  1. Edinburgh
  2. Sheffield
  3. York
  4. Southampton
  5. London
  6. Glasglow
  7. Belfast
  8. Cardiff
  9. Bristol
  10. Birmingham

Edinburgh proved to be the safest riding city, with 82% of riders always wearing the recommended safety gear. York and Sheffield also scored highly. 67% of York riders replace their helmet within five years and 57% of motorcyclists in Sheffield wear a back protector every time they ride. London made it into the top five, with 83% of riders wearing safety gear..

When it comes to helmet safety, UK riders are more focused. 97% of motorcyclists said they had replaced their helmet in the last five years, which is the maximum recommended life span.

Head of Carole Nash Marketing, Rebecca Donahue has given her opinion on the research. “It’s very encouraging to see that bikers around the UK are taking their riding leathers and helmet safety seriously, however it’s important to make sure you stay on top of this. We’d recommend getting your leathers and boots regularly checked to ensure they are the recommended thickness and always get them looked at after any type of fall or accident. Although new leathers and protective gear can be expensive, it’s something that could potentially save your life. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

As experienced motorbike insurance brokers, we offer leathers and helmet cover, giving you peace of mind when you’re out on the road.
