Motorbike Insurance for Delivery Drivers

motorbikes-riding-in-london.jpg

If you use your motorbike to deliver goods from one place to another, do you need a special kind of motorbike insurance? In short yes. What you’ll need is what’s known as motorbike courier insurance.

But who exactly needs motorbike courier insurance? And what are the different options available? We’ve delved into the subject, here:

What is motorbike courier insurance?

Motorbike courier insurance ensures you are covered for the delivery and transport of goods for work using your motorbike.

In a lot of cases, courier insurance will be more expensive than a normal premium because insurers will consider you a higher risk to insure than normal motorbike users. Some insurance providers may even decline to insure a delivery driver as they believe them to be too high of a risk.

Delivery drivers are considered higher risk due to the longer periods of time spent out on the road and the strict deadlines they sometimes need to meet (which means they may be more likely to be in a rush).

Who needs motorbike courier insurance?

Anyone that uses their motorcycle or moped for work transporting goods from one place to another needs to be covered.

It is essential to have this type of cover if your job falls into this category because if you need to claim and don’t have the right level of cover, your insurer won’t pay out. Whilst in some cases it costs more than an ordinary policy, it’s not worth the risk for the sake of an extra few pounds.

Different types of motorbike courier insurance

Just like any type of insurance cover there’s three levels of cover to choose from:

  • Third Party – the minimum legal level of cover. This covers compensation for damage or injury caused to others and their property.
  • Third Party Fire & Theft – the same benefits as Third Party, but also covers you if your bike is stolen or caught in a fire.
  • Fully Comprehensive – includes all the benefits of the previous levels, as well as, any accidental damage or injury treatment even if you’re at fault for the incident.
