The Czech Republic is known for its tourism and old world charm, though it’s one of the most resilient locales in the world. Having gone through multiple wars and changes, the Czech Republic only became a country in 1993. The region has produced high-quality automotives for years, with cars that are durable and easy to drive. There are many car manufacturers that originated from the Czech Republic and we’re listing four of the most important.

Skoda

As the oldest car manufacturer in the Czech Republic, Skoda has produced some incredible vehicles. Founded in 1895, the company has developed models like the Laurin and Klement A, Octavia and VOS. Skoda started off creating motorbikes, moving into car development by 1905. Skoda started to hit its stride in the 1930s, developing a new kind of chassis used for cars like the Rapid and Favorit.

In the modern age, Skoda produces cars for people from all walks of life. Historical models are popular among classic car collectors.

Praga Automobile

Founded in 1907, Praga based itself in Prague. One of the earliest cars was built under licence from Italian company Isotta Fraschini. The company produced a number of memorable cars like the Alfa, Super Piccolo, Grand 8 and R4S. Praga also diversified by designing tanks and aircraft components, such as the M53/59. In 2006, the brand was taken over by International Truck Alliance.

Jawa

Although best known for producing motorbikes, Jawa have created some stunning cars as well. The company was founded in 1929 by Frantisek Janecek and he set about becoming an established motorbike manufacturer. Jawa introduced its first car in 1934, the Jawa 700, based on the DKW F2. The 700 came with a two-stroke engine and front-wheel drive.

Another memorable motor was the Jawa 600 Minor, a sporty looking model produced in a limited number.

Zbrojovka Brno

This diverse manufacturer was founded in 1918, not long after the formation of Czechoslovakia. Zbrojovka vehicles were lightweight, with many possessing two-stroke engines. The company’s first model, the Disk, came with a four-cylinder 598 cc engine. This was succeeded by the Z 18 in 1926.

In addition to producing cars, Zbrojovka marketed firearms and typewriters.

The car industry has gone from strength to strength in the Czech Republic, making it one of the most productive automotive countries in the world.
