Tucker 48
The Tucker 48 was made in 1948 and named after its manufacturer Preston Tucker. Only 51 were produced before Tucker’s company shut down in 1949 because of a stock fraud scandal. The car had a number of innovations, including a directional third headlight known as the Cyclops Eye. The most famous feature is the ‘crash chamber,’ a padded area inside the car designed to protect drivers in the event of an accident.
1921 Helica de Leyat
The 1921 Helica, known as ‘the plane without wings,’ was made by French manufacturer Marcel Leyat. Passengers sat behind each other and the car was steered by using the rear wheels. Rather than having a conventional engine, the Helica was powered by a large propeller. A lightweight body meant the car reached a top speed of 106 miles per hour, making it extremely fast for the time. Only 30 Helicas were ever made, making it one of the rarest cars in the world.
1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing
Introduced in 1954, the Gullwing can be recognised by its distinctive doors. It became the first vehicle to feature fuel injection and for a time was the fastest car in the world, reaching a speed of 160 miles per hour.
1979 Aston Martin Bulldog
The Aston Martin Bulldog shares traits with the DeLorean from the Back to the Future series, with it even having the same gullwing doors. Yet the Bulldog was produced as a one off test vehicle by Aston Martin in 1979. Although 25 were planned, only one was built and it was given the codename of DPK901 after a character from Doctor Who. The Bulldog featured a 5.3-litre twin turbo V8 engine that generated 600 horsepower.
1954 Oldsmobile F-88
From the moment the Oldsmobile F-88 rolled off the assembling line it was destined to be a gorgeous car. It featured a fibreglass body and 250 horsepower V8 rocket engine. The car was credited with changing the style of all cars that came after it. Only 4 were made, making it a coveted addition to any collection.
