The relationship between James Bond and Aston Martin has been going strong for decades, so a partnership with Lego was bound to happen sooner or later. Lego recently unveiled a 1:8 scale replica of the Aston Martin DB5 in London. The 1290-piece model mirrors the classic motor perfectly, down to the bumpers and straight-six engine.
In addition, the Lego DB5 carries 007’s gadgetry. It features a pop-up rear-window bullet shield and machine guns protruding from the front bumper. They can be operated by turning the exhaust pipes that are hidden in the rear, or by pulling the gear stick. The hubcaps also sport spikes, while the number plates rotate. The interior features a ‘tracking computer’ and 1960s style carphone on the inner door. The best feature has to be the working ejector passenger seat. To activate it, you pull back on the rear bumper, open the roof and send the seat skyward.
Lego designer Mike Psiaki mentioned that he had 10 to 15 versions of the ejector seat mechanism on his desk during the development stage. The team filmed the prototype ejection systems in slow-motion in order to get it right. Designing the front end was difficult, since the mechanism for moving the machine guns needed to be hidden beneath the engine.
He said “James Bond fans will go wild for all of the authentic features and functions we’ve put into this car, including the tyre-scythes, pop-up machine guns, and working ejector seat. The iconic status of James Bond’s DB5 makes this car a perfect fit for the Lego Creator Expert series. We’re really excited to unveil our LEGO brick version of this elegant and timeless nature.”
The Lego DB5 is part of the Expert line, which is geared towards builders who are 16 and over. The range features several other iconic cars, including the Batmobile and Ghostbusters Ecto-1.
The Lego DB5 went on sale in August and can be bought for £130. It would make a good addition to the collection of any Lego enthusiast or James Bond fan.
