Which custom motorcycle insurance policy is right for me?
Finding the right level of specialist motorcycle insurance can prove tricky, and we want to make it as straightforward as possible for you. There are three different types of cover:
- Third-party
- Third-party, fire and theft
- Comprehensive
Third-party
This is the most basic level of custom bike insurance and offers the minimum amount of protection needed to get out on the road. It provides cover for a third party’s vehicle or property should it become damaged by an accident where you are at fault. It does not offer protection against fire, accidental damage, or the theft of your own motorcycle.
Third-party, fire and theft
This form of insurance offers the same cover as third-party only, but you will also be able to claim against fire damage or the theft of your custom bike.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive cover offers all the insurance mentioned above, as well as protection for your own bike if you accidentally damage it.
How do I get my custom motorcycle insurance quote?
The easiest way to get your custom motorcycle insurance quote is online. All you have to do is enter a few simple details about you, your bike, and the modifications you’ve made. Sometimes we may ask you for photographs and once that’s all done, we’ll be able to provide you with a quote. It’s as simple as that.
Of course, if you’d rather receive your quote over the phone, you can get in touch with us on 0333 005 3355 and we’ll be happy to speak to you.
How much does custom bike insurance cost?
That will depend. Your custom motorcycle insurance quote can vary based on a number of factors, such as:
- The level of cover you choose
- The make and model of your bike
- The modifications you have made
- Any security measures you have in place
- Your age and location
Rest assured that we’re committed to providing a suitable quote for your custom bike, taking your budget and the total value of your ride into account.
What if I need to claim on my custom motorbike insurance?
If you need to make a claim on your policy, there’s no need to worry – a team of expert handlers will help to make the process as stress-free as possible for you. There’ll be no forms to fill in and our claims line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0800 298 5533.
Each claim is different, so the time it takes to resolve them can vary, but rest assured we’ll try to reach a satisfactory outcome as quickly as possible. If you are involved in an accident but don’t intend to make a claim, you should still get in touch with us to let us know, as this is a condition of your policy.
Why might my custom bike insurance not pay out?
There are some circumstances which may invalidate your custom motorcycle insurance. These include but are not limited to any liability, accident, injury, loss, or damage that occurs when the bike is:
- In the control of someone not entitled to ride it as described by the certificate of insurance
- Being ridden by someone without a licence
- Used to carry passengers or goods in a way which is likely to affect its safe driving
The above are just some of the instances that may mean your modified motorcycle insurance will not cover you. For a full list of the exclusions, please see your policy wording.
Custom bike insurance FAQs
We understand that you might have queries about taking out custom motorcycle insurance, so we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions below.
When calculating the amount you’ll be covered for, we’ll take into account all the modifications you’ve made to your motorcycle. Rather than use the market value, which may be imprecise, we’ll agree the value subject to receiving photos and full details of your alterations. This will make sure your custom motorbike is fully and accurately protected, especially in the event of a total loss claim.
Your custom motorcycle insurance quote will vary depending on a number of things. For example, a more powerful engine is likely to mean a higher premium. However, there are steps you can take that might help you reduce the cost of your cover:
- Be sure to calculate your annual mileage accurately by checking previous MOT records
- Keep your bike locked up with a heavy-duty chain and in a secure facility such as a garage, rather than in plain sight
- Enrol on training courses to improve your riding or become a member of an approved motorcycle club, as some insurers will offer a reduced premium
- If you have more than one ride, consider multi-bike insurance, which could prove cheaper than taking out individual policies
- Keep your custom motorcycle insurance policy in place all year round to help build up your no-claims bonus
The above are just some of the ways you could lower the cost of your modified motorcycle insurance. Please visit our money-saving guide for further hints and tips.
Comprehensive custom motorcycle insurance offers you protection against any damage to your bike or to a third party, as well as for fire and theft. This type of policy will certainly offer you peace of mind when out on the road, and can actually work out cheaper than more basic levels of cover, so it can offer the best of both worlds.
Yes. All you have to do is give us a call on 0333 005 7555 to let us know what has changed. We will update your details and adjust your premium, then discuss your renewal. If you’re ever unsure about which changes or modifications need to be reported, it’s best just to check with us and we’ll let you know.
There are a couple of things you need to check here. First of all, your licence should tell you if you’re authorised to carry passengers. Next, you need to check your custom bike insurance documentation. The section regarding pillions should be approximately halfway down the Motorcycle Statement of Fact sheet.
The answer to this depends on your insurer and the level of cover. All of our specialist motorcycle insurance policies allow you to ride in the EU with the same protection you would receive in the UK. The length of time you can ride abroad can be up to 90 days, although it may vary depending on your insurer and your policy. If you’re looking to ride your bike outside the European Economic Area, you’ll also need to provide a Green Card.
Possibly! You just need to check your certificate and the terms and conditions on your policy documents.
If you elect to receive your custom motorcycle insurance documents by post, they can take up to five working days to arrive, while those sent over email should land in your inbox within 24 hours. If you need copies, just let us know and we’ll send those to you.
