What are the different levels of moped insurance?
Insurance for scooters and mopeds typically comes in three forms, each offering varying levels of protection. They are known as:
Third-party
This tier of moped insurance offers you a basic level of protection. It provides cover for a third party’s vehicle or property if you are at fault in an accident involving your moped. You are not insured for accidental damage, fire, or the theft of your own scooter.
Third-party, fire and theft
This form of scooter insurance means you are covered in the event of fire damage or the theft of your vehicle, as well as the third-party protection mentioned above.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive moped insurance offers all the cover included in a third-party, fire and theft policy, as well as insurance for your own vehicle if you accidentally damage it.

Why would your moped insurance not pay out?
There are some circumstances which may invalidate your moped insurance. These include, but are not limited to, any liability, accident, injury, loss, or damage that occurs when your scooter is:
- Being driven by anyone who isn’t entitled to ride it under the certificate of insurance
- Being ridden by someone without an appropriate licence
- Your bike is carrying goods or pillions in a way that compromises how safe it is to ride
These are just some of the instances that may mean you are not protected by your scooter insurance cover. For a list of all exclusions, please refer to your policy document.
What cover can we offer for your moped?
The types and levels of insurance cover available for your moped are just the same as any other form of motorbike insurance, so there’s no need for confusion. Moped Insurance FAQs
We understand you might have some queries about moped insurance and the cover your policy offers you. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions to hopefully provide the answers you need.
Moped insurance prices can vary widely depending on a number of factors, so there’s no set answer to this question. The cost of your policy is likely to change in line with the level of cover you choose, the make and model of your scooter, your age, where you live, and the security measures you have in place to store and keep your vehicle safe.
There are several things you can do to try and improve the accuracy of your scooter insurance quote:
- Be sure to accurately check your annual mileage by looking at past MOTs.
- Lock up your moped using a chain and, if possible, keep it safely stored in a shed, garage, or other secure unit.
- Enrol on approved training courses to improve your riding as, depending on your level of cover, this could potentially help.
- Maintain your moped insurance all year round as this will enhance your no claims bonus.

Comprehensive moped insurance affords you peace of mind. You’ll be covered for damage to your bike, any damage to a third party, and for fire and theft. Every rider’s situation is different, so the right solution for one might not be suitable for another, but comprehensive moped insurance can sometimes prove cheaper than third-party cover, so it’s certainly an option worth exploring.
Compulsory Basic Training, or CBT, is typically a requirement before you can ride a moped on the road and, as a result, you need to have it to be considered eligible for insurance. There are some exceptions, however, such as when you’re riding a moped with an engine up to 50cc.
This will depend on your cover and your insurer. However, our policies mean you can ride in the EU with the same level of protection you’d receive in the UK. The period for which you can ride abroad can span up to 90 days, but this can also vary between insurers. If you’re planning to ride outside the European Economic Area, you’ll also need to acquire a Green Card.
Your scooter insurance documents should be with you via email within 24 hours. If you’ve opted to receive them by post, that can take up to five working days.
